      Frequently Asked Questions

How can I reduce the carbon footprint of my building?

While reducing energy use is important, biggest steps towards making large buildings more environmentally friendly is the adoption of  renewable energy technologies, of which solar power is the fastest-growing. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC) regularly maintained and updated can help reduce a buildings carbon footprint by being as efficient as they can be without wasting excess energy. Installing low energy humidifiers instead of electric steam ones will also help. You can even get sensors that can measure air quality to determine how much ventilation is needed. The knock-on effect of this is that a building will use the right amount of electricity resulting in not only lower energy bills, but a reduced carbon footprint.

Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?

Many commercial organisations have already realised the huge potential income stream available from solar energy. Simply by utilising the roof space on your commercial premises, agricultural buildings, factories, warehouses, schools or hospitals, you can install solar power generators and start generating solar energy.

Most commercial solar panel installations meet the requirements for Permitted Development. Permitted development rights essentially allow you to carry out certain building works and changes of use without having to make a planning application (within reason).

How can replacing lighting improving our energy use?

Lighting can account for 40% of energy used in a typical commercial building, so it’s an obvious place to start when looking at reducing energy costs. A great tip is to look at ways of increasing natural light, which arguably creates a more comfortable working environment. LED lighting typically achieves energy savings of 50-70% compared to conventional lighting and, if used to its full potential, could eliminate lighting as a major contributor of global emissions.

Should we install EV chargers on our office premises?

As we countdown to the UK ban on new petrol and diesel vehicle sales in 2030, the race is on to go electric.  It's time to plan ahead to develop the workplace charging infrastructure your employees and customers will need.

The direction of sustainable transport is clear. Zero emission driving is at the heart of the government's net zero commitments, including the world’s most ambitious climate change target of 78% emissions cut by 2035 – compared to 1990 levels.

As more employees and customers make the switch to electric vehicles, the need for easy to access charging facilities at the places we work at, shop and visit is growing. You'll need to consider many factors to make your business EV ready and develop on-site charging facilities that you can scale as demand grows further.

Should I be future-proofing our green credentials now?

‘Going green’ has, for years, been a moral choice. With climate change at the forefront of discussion, ‘Going green’ has become a business must in terms of not only supporting the environment, but also future proofing your business. Studies show that consumers are basing their choices on the green credentials of the brands they are buying from-actively enquiring as to the sustainability of a business’s products.

"Managing several academies for a Trust is no mean feat. Overseeing compliance, health and safety and building services to current legislation whilst being reactive to asset failure requires a proactive, instant response that means the difference between academy remaining open or closing for the day." ~Andy Lucas, Outwood Grange
